| Fall: Community
Ethics and Humor
Students will explore the definitions of humor, the art of
creating humor, and the ethical issues that humor can raise in
oral, written, and visual texts. What is humor in written and
oral texts? What literary devices are most commonly used in
creating humor for a variety of genres? What ethical issues
commonly surface with regard to using humor? What is the role of
the audience? Students will have the opportunity to examine
these questions and to create their own humorous expository
vignettes and critiques.
Spring: Community Ethics and Literature
Courses in this
learning community will allow students to examine the ethics of
citizenship or citizens' actions in the workplace, academic and
general communites. Students will define and examine definitions
of (un)ethical behavior in a variety of community contexts. What
are the causes and effects of the new "cheating" culture in
education, business, and/or sports? What is academic dishonesty?
