ADVISEMENT AND REGISTRATION FOR FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN

  1. Determine which courses you need to take.
    1. Review the requirements of the University College Core Curriculum.  All students must complete the core curriculum.  Fulltime students must take a minimum of 12 credit hours. A typical first-semester schedule will have 14-15 credits.
    2. Review the placement criteria for Freshman Seminar, English, and Mathematics. You must take courses that match your level of preparation. University College will have your high school GPA and SAT scores.  You will take a placement exam at First Steps.
    3. Review the four-year plan for your intended major.  Many majors require specific choices among courses that satisfy Core Curriculum requirements.
    4. Complete the Freshman Questionnaire. If you are not sure about some of your classes, don't worry.  A University College advisor will review your Questionnaire and answer any questions you may have (see below).

  2. Meet with a University College advisor. You will meet with a University College advisor at First Steps.  Your advisor will make sure the courses you have selected best fits the placement criteria, core requirements, and intended major.  He/she may suggest some alternatives and options.

  3. Register for classes.
    1. Log in to Banner Self-Service (http://bannerbl03.uncfsu.edu:9000/)
      1. On the menu, Select “Login” (view page image)
      2. Enter your Student ID number (you will have received your Student ID upon check-in at first Steps; page image)
      3. Enter your PIN. Your initial PIN is your birthdate in six digits (e.g., March 7, 1986 = 030786). Banner will require you to reset your PIN (another six-digit number) and set up a security question.
    2. Select “Student Services.” (page image)
    3. Select "Registration." (page image)
    4. Select "Add/Drop classes." (page image)
    5. Click "Class Search" to find specific sections of each class you want to take. (page image)
      1. Select a Subject (e.g., English, Physical Education), and enter a course number. You can also enter other search criteria such as days and times.
      2. Click Submit to see all classes that correspond to the search criteria selected. (page image)
      3. Review the class sections to find a section that you want. Click the check box to the left of the section you want. If there is no check box, that section is closed.  Look for another. (HINT: Write down the course, days, and times for each class.)
      4. Click "Register" to add the class.
    6. When you have registered for all your classes, print a copy of your schedule (Student Services --> Registration --> Student Detail Schedule), then log out of Banner by clicking "Exit."

You can review your schedule at any time by logging in to Banner.  If you need to change your schedule, you will be able to do so during Orientation.

Want to look for classes before First Steps? Don't have your Student ID yet? From Banner Self-Service, click "Class Schedule." You can search for classes as described above. Complete an Advisement Worksheet and bring it with you. This will speed your registration at First Steps.
