Karen McLeod

Ms. McLeod began her Public Health Career as the Health Promotion Coordinator at Cumberland County Public Health Department.  She was employed with the department for six and a half years.  Her job allowed her to interact within the community by means of providing opportunities to promote awareness through education, coordinating programs, and implementing policy and environmental changes that address physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco.  Ms. McLeod departed from the Cumberland County Health Department in February 2015 and accepted a position in March 2015 as a Social Work, Care Manager in the Care Coordination for Children Program at the Durham County Department of Public Health.  As a Care Manager, Ms. McLeod worked with families to identify strengths and areas of concerns.  Additionally, she identified programs, services, and resources that met the family's needs through home visits, doctor visits, telephone calls, and other personal contacts.  Ms. McLeod was appointed Public Health Social Work Supervisor at the Durham County Department of overseeing the Care Coordination for Children Program, May 2017.  In her role as supervisor, Ms. McLeod is instrumental with connecting to various community agencies to promote the Care Coordination for Children Program, program budgetary items, maintaining fidelity within program pertaining to program guidelines and policies, staffing, and public health guidelines, policies, and procedures. 

  Ms. McLeod has been actively involved within her community.  Currently, she is a general member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a member of the North Carolina Public Health Association, Social Work Section.   Additionally, she continues mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from local universities.   Ms. McLeod volunteers with the Durham Habitat for Humanity, seeking opportunities to engage in on-site construction builds Additionally, she volunteers with the summer feeding program through the East Durham Children's Initiative in Durham County and is also a volunteer at a local elementary school in Wake County Public School System.
