The Serials Department is a unit in Charles W. Chesnutt Library located on the first floor. The primary objective of the Serials Department is to provide access to the journals and popular magazines offered through the library. The library subscribes to titles from various publishers. The print materials are received via the United States Postal Service. Publication times vary i.e., weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, annually, or semi-annually. All material is for in-house use only.
The terms Periodical and Serial are used interchangeably in libraries. A Periodical is published periodically, and a Serial is published in a series. The department houses a collection of journals, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and microfiche. The Current Collection in the department consists of the two most current years. The Bound Collection of the Serials Department contains all back issues of print material. All titles are shelved/filed alphabetically. Microfiche and newsletters are housed in file cabinets in the department. A microform reader/printer is available to use with microfiche. The Serials department also has individual and group study areas available.
Print and electronic sources offered through library represent general and specialized subject information. Computers are available in the Reference Department to search and retrieve journal articles using the online catalog and the databases. The Serials Department submits dissertations and theses to The HFGroup for binding and to ProQuest for digitization and publishing in the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Full Text database.
