Every year, Alumni Relations upholds the annual tradition of crowning Mr. or Ms. Alumni and recognizing the Family of the Year. These traditions highlight FSU alumni that are active within the Bronco community and within their own communities.
Family of the Year Award
For nearly 40 years, alumni of Fayetteville State University have participated in the selection of the FSU Family of the Year. This high honor recognizes multi-generational families who continue to exemplify FSU’s motto: Res Non Verba. Deeds Not Words. The families selected over the past four decades continue to support and enhance FSU through their great efforts. These selfless acts include volunteerism, advocacy, and giving back to FSU through a variety of means.

2023 Family of the Year - The Randall Family
Fayetteville State University (FSU) is proud to announce that Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Michael D. Randall and Valerie Randall have been recognized as the esteemed Family of the Year at this year's Fall 2023 Convocation on September 21, 2023.
The Randalls have been actively involved with FSU's alumni chapters, committees, and initiatives. Their contributions have had a significant impact on the university's growth, development, and success.
LTC (R) Michael Randall, President and CEO of Safeguard Security Solutions, LLC, is a proud FSU alumnus who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. His extensive military career ended as Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of dedicated service. Throughout his journey, LTC (R) Randall remained deeply connected to FSU and has continued to give back to his alma mater.
Valerie Randall, with a remarkable career of 36 years of service in the Federal Government, earned her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, both from FSU. She later pursued a master's degree in education (administration & supervision) from the same institution. Valerie's commitment to education and her strong ties to FSU have made her an invaluable part of the Bronco community.
The Randall family's connection with FSU goes beyond their academic achievements. They established the Gladys Randall Endowed Athletic Scholarship in honor of their mother, who was a devoted supporter of FSU's athletic events and Homecomings. This scholarship aims to support future generations of students in their pursuit of education at FSU.
The Family of the Year recognition is a testament to the Randall family's unwavering dedication to FSU and its values. Their commitment to higher education and community building resonates with FSU's mission and serves as an inspiration to current and future generations of Bronco family members.

2023–2024 FSUNAA Ms Alumni winner is Dawn McGee
Ms. Dawn N. McGee graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1996 then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in 2000 from Fayetteville State University. Dawn is a Life Member of the Fayetteville State University National Alumni Association & currently serves on the membership committee of the Military Chapter of the FSUNAA.
Ms. McGee has dedicated most of her professional career to the education of others. She has served as a middle school and high school science teacher as well as a TA while pursuing a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences. Currently, Dawn serves in the Department of Biological & Forensic Sciences as a lecturer of Biology & laboratory manager of Forensic Sciences. She is the primary advisor of the Delta Xi chapter at FSU and member of the Fort Liberty Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Some of her achievements include Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Outstanding University Service Award from Department of Natural Sciences & Department of Biological Sciences Award for Outstanding Instructional Support.
She is the proud daughter of Mrs. Deborah McGee-Flowers & the late Willie Ferguson. She & her husband Alrick L. Banks are members of Williams Chapel Church in Spring Lake, NC. Dawn enjoys music, mystery movies & baking.
Congratulations to the National Alumni Association’s 2023-2024 Alumni Queen, Mrs. Dawn McGee, ’96, the First Runner-up Ms. Jackie Melvin-Alexander, ’76, and the Second Runner-up Ms. Candace D. McMillan, ’08.
The 2023-2024 Mr./Ms. FSU Alumni Contest raised $36,432.31 towards the Fayetteville State University National Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment.
Miss Alumni 2023-24: Linda Regina Horton
Ms. Linda Regina Horton, a native of Washington, NC is a 2014 graduate of Fayetteville State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She is a member of the Raleigh-Wake FSU Alumni Chapter, serving as the Vice-President.
She is a career Military Officer in the US Army National Guard. In 2001 she deployed to the Baltics in support of the Partnership for Peace Program, and in 2003, she deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She is currently assigned to the National Guard Bureau in the National Capital Region. Her outstanding achievements are, North Carolina National Guard Association President Award, Numerous Army Awards to include the Army Meritorious Service Medal. She has also made her mark as a trailblazer in being the first in North Carolina to receive the Army National Guard Eagle Rising Award, and the first female Commander of the 440th Army Band. Ms. Horton extends her life beyond the military sector. In her civilian life, she tutors and mentors local students and enjoys participating in read-ins for students and school career day programs.
She received a Master of Science in Management and Leadership and is currently a Doctoral candidate studying Public Administration. She is a member of Kingdom Life Community Church in Washington, NC and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority INC.
She is the daughter of Glenwood & Sue Horton, the mother of Calvin J. Woolard and Brittany M. Woolard and the grandmother of Blake and Carsen Woolard.
Ms. Horton enjoys spending time with family, and participating in community events, traveling, and reading.
Miss Alumni 2021-22: Robin Boddie-Haggins
Robin Boddie-Haggins, first born daughter of the late Robert & Jean D. Boddie, is a native of Nashville, North Carolina. A 1974 graduate of Northern Nash High School in Rocky Mount, NC., Robin was destined to follow the footsteps of her father who was a proud graduate of Fayetteville State University. She began her undergraduate matriculation at Fayetteville State University and graduated with honors in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. She received her Masters of Education from East Carolina University and completed further post -graduate work at East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The value and love for family and others, traveling, volunteering, entertaining and living a life of servitude, joy and gratitude are just a few of her intentional attributes. Robin and her husband Sidney, are the proud parents of two children and three granddaughters.
Mr. Alumni 2020-21: Mr. Kevin Wardlaw
Kevin Wardlaw is a 1986 graduate of Fayetteville State University where he majored in Speech and Theatre. He participated in theatre productions and was the radio announcer for the campus-based public radio.
Kevin was a scholarship athlete playing football and running track for the Broncos and was inducted into the Fayetteville State Hall of Fame in 2007. He pledged Omega Psi Phi in the fall of 1983. He served as the basileus for the Delta Gamma chapter and was Omega Man of Year for the Charlotte Alumni chapter, Pi Phi. He has been a photojournalist for WCNC for the last 32 years. Kevin is an active member of his church, Memorial Presbyterian in Charlotte and is a proud husband and father.
