Deirdre Hawkins

Professor Deirdre Hawkins received her BA in Communication at Fayetteville State University, her MA in Media and Communication with a concentration in Speech Communication at Norfolk State University. During her undergrad here at Fayetteville State Professor Hawkins worked as a staff writer for the Voice Newspaper.

Prior to teaching, Professor Hawkins spent time in the field working at The Virginian Pilot Newspaper in Norfolk, VA where she was an editor. She’d later expand her experience as a print advertising coordinator for The Virginian Pilot and Distinction Magazine.

Her love for newspapers continued at the News and Observer Newspaper in Raleigh, NC where she was a digital advertising coordinator, with her focus being demographic (advertising) content fulfilment. While at the N&O, Professor Hawkins also spent time as a voiceover specialist.

Professor Hawkins began teaching in 2016 at Fayetteville State University, Methodist University and Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC). Her academic interest and specialties are public and professional speaking, advertising and interpersonal communication. Currently, Professor Hawkins resides in Washington DC with her husband and fur babies where she continues to teach remotely at FSU, FTCC and Campbell University. Prior to her relocation she served as the Assistant Chair for the Department of Communication, Languages, and Cultures.
