Dr. Michelle Bates

Dr. Michelle Bates is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Fayetteville State University. She joined FSU in 2017 as an adjunct instructor and later served as the MSW Director of Practicum Education from 2021 to 2023. In addition to her role as Assistant Professor, Dr. Bates is a Baylor College of Medicine All of Us Biomedical Research Scholar. As a Biomedical Research Scholar, her research focuses on uterine fibroid disparities among Black and Hispanic women.

Dr. Bates is a licensed clinical social worker with extensive experience in both federal and local government agencies, including Quantico, as well as in non-profit organizations and as a therapist.

Her accolades include being named the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year by the FSU School of Social Work and receiving the Fayetteville Observer’s 40 Under 40 honor in 2023. Dr. Bates’ current research interests include minority health disparities, child welfare, and school-based interventions.

A lifelong learner, researcher, and innovator, Dr. Bates is passionate about mentoring future social workers and researchers. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys traveling with her family, volunteering in her community, and continuing her lifelong journey of learning.
