National Student Exchange (NSE)

The National Student Exchange (NSE) program is a new opportunity available to Fayetteville State University students in which students can choose another institution from across the country, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands to study away at for a semester or year. This is a great option for those who want to travel in the US, or those who want to eventually study abroad but aren't quite ready to go to another country.

Benefits

  • Research, field study, and internship opportunities
  • Personal growth/independence
  • Intercultural understanding
  • New connections and professional development
  • Live and work in a culturally diverse society

Incoming Students

Once incoming students are placed at FSU, you will receive an email from the NSE Coordinator with information about FSU! From there, the NSE Coordinator will walk you through how to get registered for classes, the housing process, meal plans, and more. Feel free to reach out to the FSU NSE Coordinator with any questions!

Outgoing Students

FSU students interested in participating in NSE should make sure they meet eligibility requirements and then read through the NSE Website (check the link on the right side of this page) and pick a few campuses you’d want to go to. After you’ve selected a few campuses you’re interested in, use the NSE Appointment Form button on the right to have an appointment set up with our NSE Coordinator. The process for outgoing students after the NSE Appointment is:

  • Meet with your academic advisor to plan what classes you can take on exchange and make sure the campus you want to go to will fit your degree program and professional and personal goals.
  • Begin the online application on the NSE website (reach out to the NSE Coordinator with any questions about this)
  • Pay the $150 NSE application form with your application on the NSE Website (this fee is not billed until your application is finalized and the fee is non-refundable)
  • Talk to your NSE Coordinator about the Placement process once your application and fee are submitted!

Students can apply for NSE year-round, and early application is recommended. Applications for Priority Placements for the upcoming academic year (fall or spring semester) are due February 25th with placements confirmed in early March. You will list 4-5 campuses on your application for Priority Placements. Direct Placements are open from March 15th to November 30th each year (individual campus availability and deadlines may vary). See 2024-25 Direct Placement Availability. Check the NSE Website or reach out to your NSE Coordinator for more information about placements!

TUITION AND FEES

NSE has two options for payment of tuition and fees: home and host payment. FSU operates under the home payment plan, meaning students exchanging through NSE would pay their tuition and fees to their home campus, and would pay room and board and additional miscellaneous fees to their host campus. Most financial aid travels with students to their host campuses but check with your financial aid advisor to be sure.

In addition, remember to keep these other expenses in mind:

  • NSE Application fee: this is $150 (cannot be waived and is nonrefundable).
  • Miscellaneous fees: your host campus may have some other optional or mandatory fees, which you can see on their NSE campus profile.
  • Course-related fees: students should expect to pay the host campus for books and other course-related fees (lab fees, supplies, field study, and more).
  • Maximum course load: some campuses will charge more per credit hour fees beyond a certain number of credits. Please check the NSE campus profile of the campus you want to attend to see if they have this rule.
  • Room and meals: most NSE campuses have on-campus housing available. Check the Room/Meals tab of the NSE campus you’d like to attend for estimated costs. If you decide to live off-campus wherever you go, you’ll be responsible for covering these expenses.

VIRTUAL NSE INFO SESSIONS

The NSE hosts virtual info sessions throughout the year. The schedule can be found at this website: https://nse.org/exchange/info/. These info sessions will cover the basic information about NSE, including tuition, financial aid, course options, housing, research tips, and campuses.

In addition to the NSE Info Sessions above, the FSU International Education department will be hosting virtual NSE Summer Info Sessions. Register for each session at least a day before the meeting at the links below:

We hope to see you at these info sessions!
