Study Abroad Programs

The Office of International Programs provides FSU students with opportunities to study abroad and participate in study-away experiences that expand their academic, personal, and professional horizons. We believe that meaningful international experiences are an important part of preparing students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected and global society. Through our partnerships with universities and approved program providers around the world, FSU students have access to study abroad and study-away opportunities in more than 30 countries. In addition to supporting semester and short-term study abroad opportunities, the Office of International Programs works closely with FSU faculty to develop and facilitate faculty-led programs that allow students to engage in academic learning, cultural immersion, and experiential education abroad.

Why Study Abroad?

Studying abroad is a transformative opportunity that allows students to expand their academic, personal, and professional horizons. Through international experiences, students can strengthen their interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, gain a deeper understanding of other cultures, enhance their professional development, and prepare for future careers and graduate study. If you are interested in studying abroad, explore the information below to learn more about the process and available opportunities.

There are two types of programs offered at FSU: Faculty-Led and Approved Provider Programs. Our faculty-led programs are study abroad initiatives organized by FSU faculty and the Office of International Programs department. These programs are typically short-term ones--two to four weeks. Approved Provider Programs are organized by our partners and are generally longer programs (a year, semester and summer long).

Get Started/The Study Abroad Process at FSU

1. Complete the FSU Study Abroad Application
Begin by completing FSU’s internal study abroad application and submitting it to the Office of International Programs. After submitting your application, schedule an advising appointment to discuss your goals, interests, and study abroad options.

2. Explore Study Abroad Programs
Research programs that align with your academic, personal, and professional goals. Explore opportunities through our approved program providers, including AIFS and CIEE. Faculty-led study abroad programs will be promoted through the Office of International Programs and across campus. If you are interested in a faculty-led program, let us know so we can help you get started.

3. Apply to Your Selected Program
Following your initial advising appointment and a successful review of your FSU internal application, you may apply to your selected program through the appropriate approved program provider or partner institution. The Office of International Programs will guide you through this process and help ensure that you understand all required application materials and deadlines.

4. Prepare for Your Study Abroad Experience
Once you are accepted into a study abroad program, you will meet with the Office of International Programs to review your next steps. We will assist you with important preparations, including obtaining a passport and visa (when required), securing health and travel insurance, exploring financial aid and scholarship opportunities, completing required forms, and preparing for your academic and personal experience abroad.

5. Complete Pre-Departure Requirements
Before departure, all students are required to participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the Office of International Programs. This orientation will help you prepare for academics, culture, health and safety, travel, finances, communication, and other important aspects of your time abroad.

6. Stay Connected While Abroad
Throughout your study abroad experience, the Office of International Programs will remain in contact with you and your program provider. We will use email and other appropriate communication channels, including social media when applicable, to share important information, check in with students, and support you throughout your international experience.

FSU Faculty-Led Programs

Faculty-led programs provide FSU students with the opportunity to study abroad as part of a cohort led by FSU faculty members. These programs combine academic coursework with cultural immersion, experiential learning, and opportunities to explore the host country and community. The Office of International Programs encourages FSU faculty to develop and lead short-term international programs, either independently through the University or in collaboration with one of our approved program providers. Faculty members interested in developing or leading a study abroad program should complete the Faculty-Led Program Proposal Form below or contact Dr. Marketus Presswood in the Office of International Programs to learn more about program development and working with an approved provider.
