The mission of the Office of Legal Affairs is to provide Fayetteville State University with the highest quality legal representation.By doing so, the Office of the General Counsel seeks to limit FSU's legal exposure by minimizing legal risks and costs, reducing the need for litigation, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, as well as University of North Carolina and FSU policies and procedures. In support of its mission, the staff in the Office of the General Counsel is committed to acting with reason, knowledge of the law and integrity.

Our Clients

The Office of Legal Affairs represents Fayetteville State University and provides advice and counsel to members of the University community based upon what is in the best interest of FSU. Advice and counsel is provided to a member of the University community solely within the context of the course and scope of the individual's employment with or as an agent of the University. The Office of the General Counsel does not provide legal services or advice to employees or students regarding personal matters. Employees and students should consult a private attorney for personal legal concerns.

Response Guide for Handling Information Requests from Federal, State and Local Agencies

Request for Information

Federal, state or local agencies may seek information from Fayetteville State University regarding a range of matters. These matters may include, but not be limited to the following:

  • compliance with applicable laws or regulations,
  • criminal inquiries,
  • immigration issues, or
  • matters pertaining to individual students or employees.

This guide is intended to help manage such inquiries.

 

What to do if …

  • Federal, state or local law enforcement agency personnel contact you by phone, in writing, or visit your office

or

  • Federal, state or local non-law enforcement agency personnel contact you by phone, in writing, or visit your office

or

  • You are requested to provide information about a student or employee

 

Contact LARC for Assistance

If an agent visits your office, ask the agent to wait in a public area and contact the Division of Legal, Audit, Risk and Compliance (LARC) at (910) 672-1145.

If the agent contacts you by telephone or in writing, forward the request for information to LARC.

In either case, LARC will provide guidance on how to handle the matter.

When seeking assistance from LARC, please specify whether you have received a subpoena, court order or formal written agency complaint.
