Expecting and Parenting Campus Community

Fayetteville State University is committed to creating and maintaining a community free of discrimination. The Title IX Office has established procedures for ensuring the equal treatment of pregnant individuals and individuals with pregnancy-related conditions.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq., is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities.

Title IX protects those who are pregnant or parenting from discrimination in our University’s programs and activities. Title IX also requires that pregnant students receive reasonable adjustments to coursework, schedules, or other requirements if necessary based on their pregnancy. The US Department of Education’s regulation implementing Title IX specifically prohibits discrimination against a student based on pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery from any of these conditions. The Title IX regulation also prohibits a school from applying any rule related to a student’s parental, family, or marital status that treats students differently based on their sex.
