Fayetteville State University Representatives Participated in Graduate Education Week and University of North Carolina System Day in Raleigh

Raleigh, NC (May 23, 2023) - Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed May 22-26, 2023 as Graduate Education Week in North Carolina. On May 23, Fayetteville State University representatives traveled to downtown Raleigh to participate in Graduate Education Week and University of North Carolina (UNC) System Day activities.

After attending a legislative overview session at the North Carolina Museum of History, FSU’s Graduate Education Week representatives discussed the impact of graduate research on the state of North Carolina with Representative Frances Jackson, Representative Diane Wheatley, Senator Tom McInnis, Representative Garland E. Pierce, and Senator Val Applewhite at the North Carolina General Assembly.

  • Kimberly A. Tamsett, a recent Master of School Administration (MSA) graduate, discussed her research on increasing reading proficiency scores in North Carolina’s K-12 schools.
  • Roguens Stinvil, who is pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in business intelligence and data analytics, discussed the impact of information literacy on a growing economy.
  • Ashanti Gaydon, a Master of Social Work (MSW) student, discussed the stigmatization of mental health and its detriment on black adolescents in America and access to high-quality education and mental health options in North Carolina.

On Graduate Education Week and UNC System Day at the legislature, FSU’s graduate student representatives attended meetings and networking activities with graduate students from North Carolina’s public and private graduate schools, members of the North Carolina Council of Graduate Schools, representatives from the University of North Carolina System, and other representatives from FSU, including Dr. Alison Van Nyhuis, Director of the Graduate School and Program Review, and Dr. Johnny M. Smith, Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs.
