Rising to No. 2 in North Carolina, Fayetteville State University Stands Out on 2025 "Best for Vets: Colleges" List
The new ranking reflects the university’s growing recognition for serving thousands of military-affiliated students just minutes from Fort Bragg.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Fayetteville State University has earned the No. 2 spot in North Carolina on the 2025 “Best for Vets: Colleges” list, released Monday by the Military Times. This ranking considered 357 colleges and universities across the country, placing FSU among the top institutions statewide and regionally.
The university also achieved high marks in several additional categories:
- No. 7 in the Southeast region
- No. 26 among traditional colleges
- No. 28 among public institutions
- No. 31 in general education
- No. 33 overall nationwide
This marks a notable rise from last year’s No. 6 position in North Carolina, reflecting one of the largest year-over-year improvements among all evaluated colleges. The advancement further strengthens FSU’s reputation as a top destination for students who are members of the military community.
“Fayetteville State University’s commitment to military-connected students is central to our mission,” said Mitch Seal, Ed.D., associate vice chancellor for Military Academic and Support Services. “Being recognized as the No. 2 institution in North Carolina and among the nation’s best on the 2025 “Best for Vets: Colleges” list affirms the impact of our work on behalf of service members, veterans, and their families. Our close partnership with Fort Bragg and the surrounding military community keeps us attuned to their evolving needs. We remain dedicated to providing flexible, high-quality academic pathways, robust support services, and a campus environment that honors their service and supports their success.”
In fall 2025, FSU enrolled more than 2,500 military-affiliated students, one of the largest such populations among North Carolina’s public universities. As a central hub for the state's military presence, FSU's location near Fort Bragg reinforces its important role as a premier higher education destination for those connected to the armed forces across the region.
The “Best for Vets: Colleges” list is a respected measure of how well universities serve veterans, service members, and their families. The rankings take into account federal data, student outcomes, and the availability of military-specific programs and support.
