Fayetteville State University (FSU), a public comprehensive, historically Black university, offers robust and innovative degree programs rooted in the liberal arts tradition. The university advances knowledge through the integration of teaching, learning, research, and public service. What began in 1867 as a one-building school established by black community leaders to educate black children in Fayetteville, has grown into a campus of 156 acres serving over 7,000 students. Since 1972, Fayetteville State University has been one of 17 institutions within the broader University of North Carolina System. Fayetteville is 50 miles away from Raleigh and less than 100 miles away from Wilmington and the Atlantic Ocean; FSU is within driving distance of many of the beaches, mountains, and cities in the coastal South, and the campus community participates in a wide range of cultural and recreational activities in the area. There are multiple events to choose from, including the mid-April Dogwood Festival and Parade, exhibits at the Museum of the Cape Fear, and Fayetteville State University Homecoming weekend.
