Fifteen FSU Bronco Global Ambassadors Study at Universidad de Almería in Spain
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Fifteen students from Fayetteville State University’s Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures (CLC) studied at the Universidad de Almería (UAL) in Almería, Spain as the university’s Bronco Global Ambassadors in the 2024 Study Abroad Program from June 1 to 29.
The students lived in the Civitas University Residence and took classes on the UAL campus. This provided them with a unique opportunity to experience language instruction from UAL professors and to interact with peers from Almería and various European countries. The program was led by four faculty leaders from the CLC, including two distinguish program coordinators, professors of Spanish José Franco Rodríguez, Ph.D., and Lenora M. Hayes, Ed.D.
“Studying abroad in Almería, Spain transformed my life and broadened my perspective of the world,” shared Alyssa Douglas, a participant from the Spanish program, about her transformative experience. “Immersing myself in a new culture and language opened my eyes to diverse ways of living and thinking, fostering a deep appreciation for global interconnectedness and personal growth.”
The cultural immersion extended beyond the classroom, with visits to significant historic sites such as La Alcazaba de Almería, the Civil War Shelters, the Old Artisan Village of Níjar, and the UNESCO World Heritage site La Alhambra in Granada. The academic experience was further enriched by tailored activities: Education students visited a local elementary school, while Communication students explored the Canal Sur TV/Radio station and participated in a regionally broadcasted podcast. All students had the opportunity to visit the Historic Casa del Cine, which houses memorabilia and historical facts about notable movies filmed in Almería, including "Conan the Barbarian," "Patton," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and the renowned HBO series "Game of Thrones."
The Bronco Global Ambassadors embraced local life by using public transportation, visiting museums, attending a traditional Flamenco show, and spending weekends by the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, students enjoyed a scenic boat tour around the coast of Cabo de Gata, one of Andalucía’s most beautiful national parks.
For many participants, this program marked their first international travel experience, made seamless and secure by the experienced faculty leaders who adeptly navigated the complexities of national and international travel.
The Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures, in collaboration with the Office of International Education, aims to continue offering the Study Abroad Program to Spain every summer. The program not only enhances FSU’s relationship with the University of Almería but also leaves a positive international imprint through our Bronco Global Ambassadors.
