FSU's Forensic Science Program Ranked #2 Nationally

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville State University's Forensic Science Program has earned a prestigious national ranking as the #2 program on the list of the Top 15 Forensic Biology Degree Programs, further cementing its status as a leader in STEM education and forensic training. The program is also the only one in North Carolina accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) and the only FEPAC-accredited forensic science program housed at a historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the state.
The ranking, released by ForensicsColleges.com, evaluated programs nationwide based on academic rigor, hands-on training, faculty expertise, and graduate outcomes. FSU’s forensic science program stood out for its commitment to producing highly skilled forensic scientists who are well-prepared for both professional careers and graduate studies.
"Being nationally recognized and as only FEPAC-accredited HBCU program in North Carolina speaks volumes about the strength of our forensic science education," said Dr. Khalid Lodhi, Director of the Forensic Science Program. "This recognition increases our visibility and boosts FSU's academic reputation."

Dr. Lodhi noted the program's focus on hands-on learning, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio in specialized courses. "We've evolved through strategic investments in lab equipment, curriculum updates, and a strong emphasis on student readiness for the forensic workforce and graduate school," he added. "We're also expanding into new forensic disciplines and enhancing research opportunities to keep our students competitive."
For students like Leslie Mendoza, a senior forensic science major, the program offers more than just academic preparation; it offers purpose.
"The death of my aunt was incredibly hard on my family, and there were so many rumors and questions surrounding what happened," said Mendoza. "When the toxicology report came back, it brought a sense of closure and truth to the situation. Knowing how much that helped my family is what inspired me to pursue forensic science."

The program's impact extends far beyond graduation. Carla Peguese, a 2012 graduate and current forensic chemist with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, credits FSU's program with setting her career in motion.
"The small class sizes and supportive professors created an engaging learning environment," said Peguese. "The mentorship I received didn't end at graduation; it continued into my professional journey."
She added, "The program gave me a solid foundation in both technical and professional skills. I'm proud to see how it continues to grow and prepare the next generation of forensic professionals."
With its commitment to student success and innovation, Fayetteville State's Forensic Science Program prepares graduates to lead in forensic labs, law enforcement, public health, and research institutions nationwide.
