For the Worrells, Michael, a member of the class of ’84, and Sharon, a member of the class of ’85, giving back to their alma mater is a personal commitment rooted in gratitude, experience, and belief in Fayetteville State University's mission.

That commitment inspired the creation of the Worrell-Ferguson Cumberland County Student-Athlete Scholarship, established at Fayetteville State University to support Cumberland County student-athletes pursuing higher education. In the 2025-26 academic year, Michael and Sharon awarded two $5,000 scholarships to FSU students who demonstrated excellence in athletics, academics, and leadership. Their goal is to expand the scholarship by adding two awards each year, increasing access and opportunity for future Bronco scholars.

Beginning in the 2026-27 academic year, the scholarship will introduce academic incentive awards to recognize classroom achievement. Students who earn Dean's List honors will receive an additional $250, while those named to the Chancellor's List will receive $500. These incentives reflect the donors' belief that athletic success should be matched by academic excellence and personal discipline.

The inspiration for the scholarship is grounded in personal experience. For Michael, early encouragement from a teacher set him on a path to higher education, military service, and global exposure before he ultimately returned home to invest in the Fayetteville community. That journey reinforced the lasting impact of opportunity and the responsibility to create it for others.

Student-athletes were chosen as the focus of the scholarship because they embody qualities that extend well beyond competition. Balancing practice, coursework, and leadership responsibilities builds discipline, resilience, teamwork, and time management, preparing students for success in their careers and communities. By investing in student-athletes from Cumberland County, the Worrell-Ferguson Scholarship strengthens the pipeline between local schools and Fayetteville State University and helps build a stronger regional future.
