Materials Science & Manufacturing (BS)

The Materials Science & Manufacturing (MS&M) produces motivated, skilled workforces in these fields, providing enhanced educational opportunities to students at HBCUs and supporting the manufacturing industry in North Carolina (NC) and beyond.

Why Materials Science & Manufacturing?

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field studying the materials synthesized, their structure, properties, and applications. Various materials, including metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, and composites, are widely used. These materials have been manufactured in the production industry, including aircraft, automobiles, electronics, household appliances, semiconductors, and sporting goods. Materials Science is the fundamental science to the development of manufacturing technologies.

Manufacturing is a designed procedure that results in mechanical, physical, or chemical changes to a starting working material, yielding new products. Manufacturing is essential in producing and delivering goods to the marketplace and for economic growth. North Carolina (NC) has a long history as a large manufacturing state, ranked among the top ten manufacturing states nationwide. Manufacturers in North Carolina account for 17.17% of the total output in the state, employing 10.16% of the workforce.

The MS&M is built on a solid materials science background for manufacturing technologies. It is a rational and practicable design not offered in other universities.

This MS&M program offers two concentrations: (1) General Concentration; and (2) Computation Concentration.
