Biomanufacturing Training Program

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR JUNE 2025 TRAINING

The 3rd training workshop is scheduled for June 9-20, 2025.

  • Fayetteville State University is hosting a FREE two-week in-person biomanufacturing training course.
  • This program will help prepare you for an entry-level position in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Classes are held in the Lyons Science Building Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Trainees must be present and engaged in every session of the in-person course.
  • Trainees are required to complete five online modules one week before the in-person course begins.
  • Please note that FSU does not provide housing for the in-person training.

The HBCU/HAIU Coalition was formed to provide a two-week hands-on, standardized course, designed to give you the essential skills and experience needed to enter the fast-growing field of biomanufacturing, no prior science background required!

In biomanufacturing, making a medicine or therapeutic product involves two main steps: upstream and downstream processing.

  1. Upstream processing is where it all begins. This step focuses on growing special cells—like E. coli—that are engineered to produce helpful proteins. You will learn how to prepare nutrients for the cells, create the right conditions to grow them in bioreactors, and trigger them to start making the product.
  2. Downstream processing comes next and involves collecting, purifying, and refining the product from the cells to make sure it is safe and ready to use.

In this course, you will get hands-on experience making and purifying a glowing protein called GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein). You will learn how to safely work in a lab, prepare solutions, use key equipment like bioreactors, centrifuges, and chromatography systems, and follow industry standards like current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

By the end of the program, you will understand the full process of how biological medicines are made, having developed valuable hands-on technical experience that can help launch your career in biomanufacturing.

EARN YOUR CERTIFICATE

After completing the two-week free course, the trainees will earn a certificate in biomanufacturing, including an advanced certificate in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
