NASA MOSAICS

About the program

This research is a visionary approach to advancing space exploration through a partnership between ISL and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), focusing on the integration of AI/ML technologies. This collaboration aims to enhance autonomous science analyses and system-level autonomy in space missions, thereby increasing scientific returns while reducing operational costs. The initiative is set against the backdrop of the 2023-2032 Planetary Decadal Survey, which emphasizes the importance of autonomy technologies in space exploration. Key objectives of this partnership include maturing low-technology readiness level (TRL) AI/ML technologies for future robotic missions, evaluating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware for space applications, and preparing students for careers at NASA through hands-on experience with relevant science and engineering challenges.
