Literature, Teaching, Pre-Law, and Creative & Professional Writing B.A. English, Secondary English 9 – 12 Teaching/Licensure Concentration

Whether considering Shakespeare’s plays or Maya Angelou’s poetry, most English teachers have a passion for sharing their love of literature and language. Writing and reading are two vital skills that most students need to be successful in all subjects. Our students learn to describe characteristics of literature in English from diverse cultures to not only expand their world view but to share their insight with others. We offer students the opportunity to compose diverse researched and/or original texts in varied genres and formats, using various composing processes, technologies and/or multimodal formats.

Ultimately, this concentration provides future high school English teachers a solid disciplinary foundation in the study of English through literature, linguistics, rhetoric, composition, digital and visual media coupled with a clear understanding of and experience with pedagogy and effective classroom practice.

FSU’s B.A. in Secondary English 9-12 Teaching/Licensure program is designed for the rigors of teaching and licensure processes. Students in this program learn about literacy education best practices and gain an in-depth understanding of how to plan literacy instruction. Typically, students in this program finish their initial English content and education coursework in the first three and a half years of enrollment at FSU and then enroll in Student Teaching/Clinical Experience their final semester.
